Hogar de Ancianos en Cotuí RD

The nursing home, Hogar de Ancianos Club de Leones Inmaculada Concepción of Cotuí, was created with the vision of Dr. Antonio Cassó, Sr., the financial support of the International Lions Club, and the extraordinary care from the nuns of the Congregación Hermanas Religiosas Hospitalarias de San José. Dr. Cassó also founded the health center, which was sponsored by the program “Sight First” of the International Lion’s Club Association.

The Lions Club Health Center of Cotuí is proud to offer superior healthcare at an affordable price to the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic. Our facility offers a state of the art clinic that provides diabetic and eye care. The profit from the health center is used to maintain the nursing home, in conjunction with donations and government funding.

Date brillo cadenita que tu mojo llega

As the founder of the nursing home, medical center, and Lions Club in the region, Dr. Antonio Cassó, Sr., is remembered by his friends as “the kind of man who only comes once every 100 years.” With Cotuí being one of the poorest of the seven provinces in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Cassó, Sr., knew it was important to give back to his community.

Dr. Cassó was the son of hard working but poor parents. His dad passed away when he was five years old, but he persisted and went to college at a time when only the wealthiest could go to college. Dr. Cassó did not let this stop him. He found ways to overcome barriers and graduated at the top of his class. He became the very first doctor in the city of Cotuí. He practiced medicine in many fields such cardiology, pediatrics, and gynecology.

His greatest achievement was his family. Dr. Cassó had six children who are doctors, politicians, businessmen, and members of the community who continue their father's vision by helping progress the region of Cibao.

Among his other achievements are: the founding of the first private clinic in Cotuí, opening the first bank in Cotuí, helping found the Uteco Regent, construction of sidewalks and the establishment of a community market.

Saber más por viejo que por diablo

As the only nursing home in the province, it provides an essential service to the community. Before the nursing home existed, families would often abandon their loved ones at the public hospitals, which often lack the resources to care for them properly. El Hogar, as the locals refer to it, is run by the sisters of Hermanas Misionera Del Padre Fantino. Since 2001, the health center has been open to the public, catering to those who are in need. Most of the patients come from the Cibao region, but some patients travel all the way from Santo Domingo to receive care they can afford.
